Princeton readings in islamist thought pdf download
There is a lengthy introduction to the anthology, the central concern of which is to disentangle Islamism from the common perceptions and popular rhetoric that have hindered a clearer analysis of its contours and perhaps also served to perpetuate a Manichean outlook which places Islam in perennial opposition to the West. A quote of Mawdudi, in which he derides those who are uncomfortable with Islamic penal law, is cited by the editors to exemplify this attitude towards the modernists.
Incidentally, the same porous boundaries are ignored between the modernists and the Islamists, despite obvious examples of intellectuals who may be considered from either, such as Rida, Afghani and Iqbal. Perhaps to over-emphasise ideological pragmatism would have rendered as problematic the application of neat categories such as Islamism to the authors chosen for this volume, something the editors are apparently unwilling to relinquish.
Notwithstanding some of the problems with this volume that have been highlighted, it remains a valuable resource for scholars and teachers in the field for its excellent translations and the very useful biographies that accompany each author.
The nature of slavery in Islam and the logic of its abolition is the subject matter of this title. It is divided into two parts. Types of slavery in Islam and the modes of slave acquisition in relation to other classical civilisations are examined here. It may be added that from the late fourteenth century, the Ottomans jolted the sanguinity of many non-Islamic lands and, for example, had many Hungarians sold into the slave markets, a process which gave birth to new dimensions in enslavement discourse.
